22th Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle. Binchester is a way station on Dere Street and guarded the crossing of the River Wear which is only 1/2 mile away. Troops on route to Hadrians Wall from York (or on the way back) would probably have stopped at Binchester for the odd day R+R as it is about half way. The fort boasts the most complete fort bathhouse in England... although to be honest that still means a reasonably small heap of rock! It might have been even more complete had the locals not pillaged most of the stone, some of which, including the apse arch, is believed to have been used to build the Saxon church at Escomb (circa approx. 600 AD). This is only 4-5 miles up the river and at the risk of starting an argument l believe that it is the oldest / most original Saxon church in England.
The museum service have asked us to demonstrate early Anglo-Saxon, the theory being that we are the people who turned up after the Romans went home. The emphasis is on living history but we rope off a small area for single combat displays.
The site isn't very big ; there isn't much room for more than a couple of tents, but if anyone wants to join us then they should ring Allan "Blue" Beneke on 0191 527 0937 to arrange matters and get directions/more info. etc.
