EVIDENCE OF VIKINGS
Sunday 8th October 1995, 7.30pm on BBC2
ln a vicarage garden in Nottinghamshire, an unpublished excavation has uncovered "certainly outside Scandinavia, the most remarkable Viking burial that's ever been investigated." Was lvar the Boneless, the most feared Viking chief of all, entombed there with his army?
ln the English Channel, Sir Robin Knox-]ohnston sets sail on a foggy day without a compass, experimenting with a forgotten Viking navigational tool. He is aiming for the Lizard: if he misses, the next landfall is New York.
ln a laboratory in Utrecht, scrapings from huge bones are analysed to see if the fantasy of giant Viking warriors is really true. lt's a saga in its own right, filmed in lceland, the Shetlands, Belgium, Sicily and England.
lntroducing Mick Bensted as Egil Skallagrimsson
Written, produced and narrated by Alan Ereira
Music by Roger Bolton and the Bratislava Radio Symphony Orchestra
Editor Laurence Rees
