Community spirit alive
What a difference a millennium makes.
Once a Viking invasion would have had villagers fleeing in fear of their lives, but yesterday the savage warriors were welcomed back to Bridgham, near Thetford.
They weren’t real Vikings, of course, rather members of a historical re-enactment group marking the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of the tiny Breckland village.
The Norsemen weren’t Bridgham's last incomers by any means. An estimated 75pc of its population has arrived in the last 15 years, yet the weekend's festivities show community spirit is alive and well and that this is no dormitory village.
In fact, you could say it's Valhalla on Earth.
