Warrior raiders fail to break village defences

VIKINGS attempting to raid Great Bowden were turned back six times by valiant young villagers. The battle with Anglo-Saxons was one of the highlights of the village festival.

Hundreds of people enjoyed events over three days and learned and experienced what life may have been like more than 1,000 years ago. Heritage group warden Rosemary Culkin, one of the organisers, said: “It was very entertaining. The Vikings tried to attack the village but they got slain each time. “There was a weapon demonstration when the fighting techniques were shown and then the children were trained for a hour and then there was a raid.

“There was also the exhibition going on all the time as well as archery. Everything went as well as I had imagined. We are hoping to have them back."

The exhibition included a recording of villagers who had learned Anglo-saxon, as well as some of the traditional crafts learned by local people and schoolchildren. Other attractions included stalls on the village green and a parade by the Fernie Hunt hounds.
